Katia and Sergei: Star-Crossed Lovers for the Ages
Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were one of the most romantic pairs ever to figure skate on the ice. As Valentine's Day approches I thought I would look back on some of their more romantic performances. They were often known as one of the few pair teams to ever kiss on the ice. So, sit back and enjoy the programs of these two-crossed lovers as they were tragically torn apart when Sergei left this world forever, and left an eternal scar in Katia's once complete heart.
In 1994, Katia and Sergei skated to "Porgy and Bess." It is a very light, romantic performance with a very passionate kiss on the mouth from Sergei to a seemingly suprised Katia at the end of the performance.
Vocalise is the next program on my Katia and Sergei most romantic list. The pair just eludes passion for each other on the ice. The program was nicknamed "The Kiss" and while the lovers do not actually kiss in the piece, they come awfully close to a kiss several times.
"The Man I Love" is the most directly romantic Gordeeva and Grinkov. The lyrics almost appear to be written for the pair themselves. This program is iconic and is always on the top of any fan's list of favorites.
The played appropriately Cinderella and Prince Charming in a Disney special. They are the ideal for illustrating fairytale love, because with these two it never seemed like such a stretch. Their performance seemed authentic and heart felt as always. Katia and Sergei seem to breathe romance without even trying. It was just a natural part of looking at each other.
Sergei and Katia played another iconic Disney couple, Pocahantas and John Smith. The lyrics are tragically perfect. The often seemed to play roles, or skated to music that seemed to foreshadow the tragedy that lay before them.
They skated to Meditation by Thais which the music is supposed to be an expression of young love which was perfect for these loving skaters.
They were so elegant and smooth almost always, so you could relax and just focus on their beautiful performances.
Reverie is my favorite Katia and Sergei program. They have many near kissing moments in this performance as well. The arrival of their daughter seem to push their romantic vision to a higher level.
Katia and Sergei are not just one of the most romantic pairs in figure skating, they are one of the most romantic in history.
